‘Resident Evil’ Reboot Gets an Official Title

The title for Constantin Film’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot has officially been announced as ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.’

Director Johannes Roberts revealed the title during an interview with IGN at SXSW’s online event, as well as some insight into the film.

Roberts revealed that the movie will serve as an origin story for ‘Resident Evil’ and will be a “separate entity” from the original franchise. So, anybody still holding out hope that Milla Jovovich would make a surprise cameo, I’m sorry to report that Roberts confirmed the new movie will have nothing to do with the original franchise.

In the interview, Roberts revealed that, along with the film’s four main leads, Racoon City will also play a “big part” in the movie and will serve as a prominent character in the film.

Taking inspiration from John Carpenter’s ‘Assault on Precinct 13’ and ‘The Fog,’ Roberts stated the film will have a claustrophobic feel, with the film focusing on a “desperate group of characters coming together under siege.”

The movie will take place between the Racoon Police Department and Spencer Mansion, with the scenes in the RPD drawing heavy inspiration from ‘Assault on Precinct 13’, and the scenes in the mansion being inspired by the creepy elements of the game. Roberts stated that he wants the viewer to have a sense of dread about what might be waiting for them under the corner, similar to how it felt when playing the game.

Along with the above-mentioned Carpenter films, Roberts stated that he was also inspired by the tone of 2019’s Resident Evil 2 reboot. He described the atmosphere of the game as dark, dreary, and “scary as hell”, and that is what he wanted to incorporate into the film.

‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’ is scheduled to be released in theatres on September 3 and stars Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Avan Jogia, Tom Hopper, Neal McDonough, Donal Logue, Lily Gao, and Chad Rook.
