New Details on ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Series

During Amazon’s panel at  ComicCon@Home, show-runner Sara Goodman of the upcoming Amazon series ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ shared some details about the YA horror series that she promises will have drama, violence, psychological aspects, dark humor, and, for fans of the film, she promises “there will be blood.”

The show, as we already know, will be a modern take on the original film which was about a group of four friends who accidentally hit and kill a man on their graduation night. Rather than report the crime, the teenagers decide to dump the body and keep what happened that night a secret. A year later, they are stalked by a killer who knows what they did and is out for revenge.

When asked why she wanted to develop the show, Goodman responded with,

“What else is there but the title?”

She would add, “Even if you’ve never read the novel or seen the movie, that title just sticks with everyone. It gives you that pit of your stomach fear because I think, on some level, everyone has done something that they don’t want other people to know about.”

Whether you’re a fan of the films or not, Goodman promises that the show will have something for everyone. Without giving away too much detail, she revealed that there would be “Easter eggs throughout the series for die hard fans,” but that you “absolutely do not have to have seen the movie or anything else to be a fan of the show.”

She further indicated that the upcoming ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ series will be something entirely different than what we’ve seen before. The show will feature an original story that revolves around a new set of characters while still paying respect to the original source material.

The show’s eight episodes will “explore these characters” as they do more than just “run from a stalker.” It will also touch on the fact that they’re dealing with relationships and “issues with their families [while also] dealing with their real lives.”

She adds, “The novel was of its time, and the movie was very much of its time, and the show, I wanted to make a show that’s very much of this time. And so no one is just a jock. No one is just a smart girl. No one is just a bitch. People are really layered and everyone has different pieces of themselves they show to different people at different times; parts that are private and parts that are public. They’re much more diverse, and people are more complicated, and I think the cast is very much representative of those deeper, layered characters. And so is the story.”

What she believes will separate ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ from other series is the fact that “every episode has a different point of view of what happened that night before the accident [making it] harder to figure out who is really after them.”

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ will star Madison Iseman (Jumanji: The Next Level), Brianne Tju (Light as a Feather), Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping), Sebastian Amoruso, Bill Heck (Locke & Key), Fiona Rene (Stumptown), Cassie Beck (Connecting), Brooke Bloom (The Surrogate), Chrissie Fit (Pitch Perfect 2) and Sonya Balmores (Inhumans)

Also, thanks to Goodman, we know that ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is set to premiere in October, 2021 on Amazon Prime Video.

We’re left with the final message, “You will get hooked.”
