Interview
1. What inspired the concept of Detox, and how did you balance horror and comedy elements?
The idea for “Detox” stemmed from screenwriter Wes’s personal struggles with phone addiction during COVID. The team drew inspiration from a farmhouse in Maine, envisioning a character cutting themselves off from technology, ironically, when they might need it most. This setup provided the perfect blend of comedy and traditional horror elements.
2. How does Detox comment on modern society, particularly regarding technology addiction?
“Detox” explores the complexities of technology dependence, avoiding a simplistic “technology bad, mindfulness good” narrative. The film highlights the contradictions of relying on devices while seeking digital independence, especially when mindfulness is often promoted through the same devices.
3. You mentioned a feature-length version is in the works. What can you reveal about the expanded story?
The feature-length version expands on the original concept, following a woman on a week-long digital detox and silent meditation retreat in the Catskills. A small cast of characters must navigate their detox amidst an ominous threat, without the aid of their locked-away phones.
4. What do you hope audiences take away from Detox?
The team hopes viewers enjoy the thrill and humor, while also recognizing themselves in the protagonist’s struggles. They aim to convey that nobody is perfect, and self-forgiveness is essential in the face of forces beyond individual control.
5. What was the most valuable lesson you learned working together on Detox?
The team emphasized the importance of thorough preparation, ensuring a solid foundation before production. They also stressed the value of snacks on set, joking that a lack of snacks would be a horror movie in itself.
