Cinedigm has acquired the North American rights to ‘Shaky Shivers,’ an 80s-inspired horror comedy directed by Sung Kang, best known for portraying Han in the Fast & Furious franchise. Cinedigm plans to release ‘Shaky Shivers’ in theaters this fall, followed by a streaming release.
‘Shaky Shivers’ won the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Gasparilla International Film Festival and will have its Canadian premiere at the Dark Bridges Saskatoon Horror Film Festival in June. In his directorial debut, Kang pays homage to the 80s horror films of his youth with this supernatural comedy set at an abandoned campground in the 1990s.
The film follows two young women, Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer), who discover a book of spells in the woods. After an encounter with an old woman, strange and frightening events start happening around the camp involving classic movie monsters like zombies, werewolves and Bigfoot. Armed only with the mysterious spell book, the duo must survive the night and find a way to stop the rampaging creatures before all hell breaks loose.
Filmed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kang dedicated five weeks to shooting at an old Girl Scout camp. He set out to capture the spirit of the 80s horror classics he grew up with for a new generation. In a statement, Kang said, “The whole idea was to make this for the old school horror hounds and for them to share it with their families today. Little by little, we’re doing that. I couldn’t be more excited about rolling this film out.”
Brad Miska, Managing Director of Cinedigm’s horror brand Bloody Disgusting, said, “This campy film transports us back to an era when spooky tales were shared by flashlight during slumber parties. Sung Kang’s directorial debut promises a truly unique and thrilling experience for fans. With its eclectic mix of quirky humor, chilling moments, monstrous creatures and a captivating throwback atmosphere, fans are in for one hell of an experience this fall.”
‘Shaky Shivers’ was written by Andrew McAllister and Aaron Strongoni. The film stars Brooke Markham and VyVy Nguyen, with Nina Yang Bongiovi, Kevin M. Lin, Michael Y. Chow and Brian Yang serving as executive producers. Jean Shim and Luci Y. Kim are producers.
Sung Kang and his cast are represented by major Hollywood talent agencies. The acquisition deal was negotiated by Cinedigm’s Director of Acquisitions Brandon Hill, along with Jack Campbell of Jackrabbit Media, who is handling foreign rights, and John Lepper of Cyfuno Ventures.
