The Black Phone is a supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and produced by Jason Blum that will be released in the United States in 2021. It was written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, and it is an adaptation of the short tale of the same name by Joe Hill, which was first published in 2004. Mason Thames portrays a kidnapped youngster who has the ability to connect with the former victims of his captor, who is played by Ethan Hawke, in the film.
Derrickson confirmed his resignation from directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in January 2020 owing to creative issues with Marvel Studios. As a consequence, he chose to collaborate on The Black Phone with Cargill. The film was announced in October 2020, and production started in February 2021. The principal shooting took place in North Carolina for two months.
The Black Phone had its worldwide premiere on September 25, 2021, at Fantastic Fest in San Diego. According to their website, Universal Pictures intends to release the picture in theatres on June 24, 2022. In general, critics commended the film for its faithfulness to the source material, Derrickson’s direction, and Hawke’s performance as the antagonist.
