‘Supernatural’ Prequel In the Works

‘Supernatural,’ which ran for fifteen seasons, followed the story of Sam and Dean Winchester as they followed in the family business of hunting things and saving people. But now, it appears that business is not yet done, as Deadline is reporting that Jensen Ackles, along with his wife, Danneel, are in talks to executive produce a prequel to ‘Supernatural’ through their company, Chaos Machine Productions, which the couple launched last year.

The series, titled ‘The Winchesters,’ will focus on the relationship of Sam and Dean’s parents, John and Mary Winchester, and is described as the epic, untold love story of how the Winchester parents met and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.

Ackles, who played the role of Dean Winchester on the original series, will reprise his role as the narrator on this new show.

In a statement to Deadline, Jensen Ackles had this to say about the new series:

“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it? When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

The characters of John and Mary Winchester were played on the series by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith.

John was a recurring character in the first season, but tragically gave his life to save his son in the premiere episode of season two. He would make the odd appearances throughout the rest of the series, including when he returned in the landmark 300th episode of the series.

Mary, who was originally killed in the pilot episode, would also make the odd appearance throughout the series, until she made her official return in the season eleven finale after being resurrected by Amara as a gift for Dean.

The characters were also portrayed by Matt Cohen and Amy Gumenick, who played younger versions of the Winchesters’ parents on the show. It’s unknown if Cohen or Gumenick will be reprising their roles or if the roles of John and Mary will be recast for this new ‘Supernatural’ Prequel series.

John Winchester took up hunting after witnessing Mary’s death by Azazel, better remembered as the “yellow eyed demon.” However, thanks to the season five episode, ‘The Song Remains the Same,’ that first introduced us to the younger versions of the Winchester parents, we learned that Mary came from a family of hunters and was a hunter herself.

Could this fact lead to the part about the Winchester parents having to put it all on the line for the sake of their relationship and the world?

The series may possibly focus on Mary attempting to start a new family with John, only to be repeatedly drawn back into the world of hunting. After all, it is a show set in the ‘Supernatural’ universe and it seems unlikely that it wouldn’t involve monsters or creatures from our nightmares.

And what’s ‘Supernatural’ without a Winchester having to save the world?

Missing from the whole mix is Ackles’ ‘Supernatural’ co-star, Jared Padalecki, who played the role of Sam Winchester.

Padalecki revealed on Twitter that he was initially “blindsided” by the news when it first broke.

In an official Tweet responding to the announcement by Ackles, Padalecki stated:

“Dude. Happy for you. Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter. I’m excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever.”

When asked by a fan if Padalecki’s comment was a joke, he replied by stating:

“No. It’s not. This is the first I’ve heard about it. I’m gutted.”

Padalecki would, however, later respond to fans, who appeared to be outraged by the fact that he had zero involvement in the project. In an official Tweet, he stated:

“@JensenAckles and I had a great talk, as we do often, and things are good. The show is early in the process with miles to go. We’ve traveled a lot of roads together, and sometimes those damn roads have bumps. Bumps don’t stop us. Once brothers, always brothers.”

There are many unanswered questions at this point, including the burning question now: Will Padalecki ever make an appearance now that it’s clear the fans want to see him involved in the project?

As more information on the series becomes available on the ‘Supernatural’ Prequel, you can rest assured that Horrorfacts will report this.
