“In seeking life, he created death.”
The first chilling glimpse of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has been unveiled at Netflix’s Tudum event, marking the Oscar-winning director’s passion project 25 years in the making.
A Monster Born From Devotion
Del Toro confessed to the Tudum audience:
“This is the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read Mary Shelley’s novel as a kid, and Karloff’s performance became almost religious to me. Monsters are my belief system.”
The filmmaker noted Frankenstein’s DNA runs through his filmography:
- Cronos (1993): Mechanical immortality
- Hellboy (2004): Outcast “demons” with humanity
- Pinocchio (2022): A father’s twisted creation
- The Shape of Water (2017): Love for the monstrous
The Cast of Creator & Creation
- Oscar Isaac (Dune) as Victor Frankenstein
- Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) as the Creature
- Mia Goth (MaXXXine) as Elizabeth Lavenza
- Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Dr. Pretorius
With supporting roles from Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) and David Bradley (Filch), the film promises gothic grandeur.
Why This Matters
- Del Toro’s first directorial feature since Nightmare Alley (2021)
- A faithful yet fresh take on Shelley’s themes
- Practical effects expected to dominate (per del Toro’s style)
