It appears that the Dark Knight will return again, as it was just announced during Warner Bros.’ presentation at this year’s CinemaCon that “The Batman 2” is officially happening.
Details about the film are still limited, as it’s unlikely an official script has been written at this time.
But what is known is that Matt Reeves will return to write and direct the planned sequel, along with Robert Pattison, who will reprise his role as the titular character.
This news shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, as “The Batman” has managed to gross over $759 million worldwide and currently holds a score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The team responsible for bringing “The Batman” to the screen has also been vocal about wanting to make a follow-up film.
During the ‘The Batman’ premiere, Reeves spoke with The Independent, where he stated, “We’re working on some other stuff too, but we have started talking about another movie.”
The “other stuff” he is referring to is the planned Penguin series at HBO Max that will see Colin Farrell reprise his role of Oswald Cobblepot from the film.
Before the film’s release, Pattison also expressed his desire to return to the role. stating that he would like to develop a trilogy based on this iteration of the character.
We will have to wait and see if any of the other cast members from the original film will be returning for the upcoming sequel, as no other official casting announcements have been confirmed at this time.
Regarding who could be the next foe to face the caped crusader, there is, of course, speculation that this sequel could see a new version of the clown prince of crime, as the infamous Batman villain was introduced at the end of the first film. This fact was confirmed by Reeves in an interview with Variety following the film’s release.
But may I ask you? Do we really need another film starring the Joker? Or is it time to see another villain from Batman’s vast rogue gallery make an appearance?
“The Batman,” of course, saw the return of the Riddler, a character that was last portrayed by Jim Carrey in 1995’s “Batman Forever.” At this point, it seems likely that the masters of puzzles will be returning for this next installment.
Instead of the Joker joining him, perhaps it’s time we saw redemption for Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy, two characters that were last seen on the big screen in “Batman & Robin.” A film that will undoubtedly go down as the worst Batman film ever made, and is best left forgotten.
Or maybe we might see a brand new villain enter the fold?
We’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for the caped crusader.
