System Shock is getting a TV Series

Greg Russo will write and direct the upcoming adaptation of System Shock for Binge. Although Russo has no experience directing, he did write a Mortal Kombat reboot for Warner Bros. last year. Nightdive Studios’ first game for PC released in 1994 will be the basis for the live-action streaming series. The CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios, Stephen Kick, highlighted Russo’s involvement in the series in a recent press release.

I’ve always believed that a live-action adaptation of System Shock would be the perfect medium to retell the harrowing story of Citadel station and its rogue AI that subjects the crew to unimaginable horror,” said Kick. “With Greg Russo and the rest of the talented team at Binge behind the wheel, our excitement for the live-action series has only gotten stronger. We can’t wait to see what grotesqueries and frights await!

Russo is also responsible for a number of other video game adaptations currently in production. Both the Space Invaders and Saints Row movies are in his hands.

Later games like Deus Ex and Bioshock were made possible through the System Shock series. After securing the series’ rights, Nightdive created the Enhanced Edition of System Shock, an upgraded version of the original title. A more complete remake of that first game will also be released this year for PC and consoles. System Shock 3 is also being developed by OtherSide Entertainment, but little is known about the title since Tencent announced it would be taking the franchise forward in May 2020.
