The wonderfully well-crafted horror comedy Sorry About the Demon, which is now available to stream on Shudder, will have viewers laughing and screaming in equal measures. It embraces the goofy, ridiculous atmosphere that is characteristic of popular horror comedies.
What could possibly be worse than being dumped? Will’s problem is that he recently discovered that the house he moved into is haunted. Will must now figure out how to make things right with his ex-girlfriend and exorcise the sacrifice-seeking demon that is residing in his house in order to meet the challenges presented by his quarter-life crisis and the presence of a house full of spirits.
Will, a young man in his twenties who is mired in a hopeless profession as a toothpaste salesperson, serves as the novel’s protagonist, Sorry About the Demon, written by Jon Michael Simpson. Amy, Will’s (Paige Evans) long-term girlfriend, breaks up with him after he finally fails to please her, and he needs to find a new place to live as quickly as possible in order to avoid homelessness. Will moves into the house that his overly excited relatives gave him, and as he does so, he begins to have the uneasy feeling that he is not alone, and that the restless ghosts of the house have made it their mission to torment him at every waking moment. Will’s relatives were overly excited when they gave him the house.
Will is thrust into the middle of an extraordinary conflict that is going on between Deomonous, the house spirits, and the proprietors of the house. Will engages in a battle for his own soul as well as the souls of his companions, while also battling his own personal demons. Will fights for his own soul as well as the souls of those he cares about, with the help of Amy, his lifelong best friend Patrick, and Aimee, who worked as a spiritual cleanser during college.
Making your vision a reality will need a significant financial investment on your part. In order for any of us to reach our full potential, we are all going to need to make challenging decisions, such as determining the amount of money, time, or relationships we are willing to forego. Will is a man who is unwilling to commit to the eventual path that he will take in life, and as a result, he and his companion are currently stranded in a location in which time passes at a different pace than they are accustomed to.
Will is instantly approachable due to the fact that he is attentive and pleasant; however, he is also frightened to proceed to the next stage of his life. Every time a new year arrives, there is a sense of foreboding that comes along with continuing on the path that life has set before you. It is in these more intimate and real moments, as well as in the continuously great performance by Jon Michael Simpson, that Sorry About The Demon starts to come into its own.
Watching this quirky, short film was a great way to pass the time. In my opinion, the fact that the movie has more of the atmosphere of a television movie is something that works to the film’s advantage. This tale contains a number of well-known horror cliches, including several instances of possession, startling jump scares, the appearance of zombie ghosts in unexpected places, and some particularly revolting scenes.
It was entertaining to spot references to other spooky horror films, such as “Poltergeist” and “Paranormal Activity,” both of which were released the same year in 2009. The visual effects in the film are similar of those in Sam Raimi’s “The Evil Dead,” functioning plainly on a smaller budget but remaining morbid and humorous at the same time. The director of this film is also Sam Raimi. One particularly sickening scene includes an arm, and it will make viewers want to shut their eyes in order to protect themselves from seeing it.
Sorry About the Demon was written and directed by Emily Hagins, a filmmaker whose career deserves close attention from us. Hagins is responsible for the film. She has already worked on a few feature films, and her repertoire includes comedies, dramas, thrillers, and romantic comedies.
On the other hand, she is already well versed in the horror genre. Her two most recent writing and directing credits before working on this Shudder horror-comedy were for stories that were published in anthologies of horror fiction. She contributed to both the V/H/S series as well as the anthology of horror comedies known as Scare Package (2019).
On January 19, 2023, Shudder was the only streaming platform that offered the debut of Sorry About the Demon.
