Back in March, it was announced that Sony Pictures and Constantin Film’s upcoming Resident Evil reboot, ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City,’ would be moving from the originally planned release date of September 03 to November 24, 2021.
Now, it appears the film could be experiencing more delays, this time in the form of reshoots.
The news of these reshoots came directly from one of the upcoming film’s stars, Robbie Amell, who will be appearing in the film as Chris Redfield, one of the original playable characters from the first Resident Evil game. During a live stream on Twitch, Amell officially stated:
“I’m actually back in Toronto for Resident Evil reshoots. So I’m Back in Chris Redfield mode.”
Although Amell made the above statement, he didn’t go into further detail about the extent of the reshoots or what it might mean for the film.
The extent of the reshoots is unknown, as nothing outside of Amell’s comment has been officially released. Sometimes, a studio will go back and add in additional footage, either adding to an already existing scene or adding an entirely new scene to the movie altogether.
Seeing as how the film is already this far along in the development stage, the reshoots could also be a direct result of feedback from early screenings. Oftentimes, studios will screen an advanced copy of their film to a test audience and make changes to scenes or even change the entire ending of a film based on the feedback they receive.
Another potential possibility could be related to the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), as they are responsible for giving the film its official rating. Sometimes, studios will have to go back and tone down certain scenes in order to obtain a lower rating for their film. The difference between an R rating (under 17 requires an adult) and a rating of NC-17 (no one under the age of 17 admitted) can make a huge difference when it comes to a film’s box office gross.
It seems unlikely that we will receive any official word from the film’s two studios or confirmation of whether or not these reshoots were the direct reason for the film’s initial delayed release date.
Along with Amell, the film is set to star Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Neal McDonough as William Birkin, Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons, Lily Gao as Ada Wong, and Chad Rook as Richard Aiken.
