Despite the negative reviews, “Morbius” director Daniel Espinosa says he is “proud” of his adaptation of the comic book “Morbius.” A 17 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating for the Jared Leto-starring superhero movie makes it one of the lowest-rated Marvel flicks ever. In an interview with Insider, Espinosa addressed the film’s poor reception.
Doctor Morbius, played by Jared Leto, suffers from a rare blood ailment and resorts to a dangerous cure in order to save others from suffering the same fate.
Critics have panned the picture since its April 1 release, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of only 16 percent, making it one of the worst-rated Marvel films ever.
The 1971 comic books by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane are the inspiration for “Morbius.” Following the story of scientist Michael Morbius (Leto), who is searching for a treatment to cure a rare blood disorder, Vampire bat blood gives Michael unforeseen talents like echolocation and an insatiable need for blood when he injects it into himself. Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson round out the supporting cast.
Insider recently asked Espinosa whether he was concerned about bad criticism.
What he said he was.
“Look, I have a lot of self-hatred so I have a lot of criticism of my own work. I’m always trying to focus on being better. But I am also proud of what I do,”
The film’s first weekend in the US brought in only $39.1 million (£24 million) and $84 million (£64 million) worldwide.
Avengers: Endgame (2019) was the highest-grossing film ever at the global box office, grossing $2.7 billion (£2 billion).
I’m hopeful Espinosa succeeds with his next endeavour. He is a gifted individual who undoubtedly have the capacity to succeed. Perhaps with something a bit less firmly established in the universe’s perspective, with Marvel and Sony functioning as parents.
