After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, fans of the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that ‘Evil Dead Rise,’ the next installment in the horror franchise, has officially begun filming in New Zealand.
The news was shared by the film’s director, Lee Cronin, who, if you recall, was specifically chosen to direct this film by none other than Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Bruce Campbell themselves, the three men responsible for creating the ‘Evil Dead’ universe.

Just last month we learned that Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic at Hanging Rock) will be starring in this new film as two estranged sisters whose reunion is inevitably cut short by the arrival of deadites, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
At the time of their initial casting, Campbell released the following statement:
“At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations. I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition.”
Also, thanks to earlier reports shared by Campbell over the past year, we know that this film is set to differ from its predecessors in that the setting will be moving from a cabin in the woods to a city skyscraper.
The film is said to be based off the original trilogy rather than Fede Álvarez’s 2013 reboot. It also seems unlikely that it will have any ties to the ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ television series that saw Campbell reprise his role as the chainsaw wielding Ash Williams.
New Line Cinema, the production company that picked up the distribution rights of the original ‘Evil Dead’ film, will be producing this new film along with Raimi, Tapert, and Campbell. The film is being developed for release on HBO Max. It’s unknown at this time if the film will receive a theatrical release in countries that don’t have access to the streaming service.

It’s good to know that the evil dead rise is actually going to happen, it feels like a billion years since the tv show was last aired.
