Filming on Constantin Film’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot has officially wrapped. The news was announced by the film’s disturbing partner, Sony Pictures, on their Twitter account.
With filming completed, the movie is now headed into post-production and, if everything goes according to plan, is eyeing a release date of September 09, 2021.
With filming completed, I wanted to give you a review of everything that we know about the film up to this point.
The idea of a ‘Resident Evil’ reboot was first conceived back in 2017, following the release of the final Paul W.S. Anderson installment of the video game franchise, ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.’
It was first announced that James Wan would be producing the film with Greg Russo writing the script.
News regarding the film went quiet until December of 2018, when it was announced that Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night) would be coming on board as director/writer of the reboot. Around the same time, Greg Russo confirmed that he was leaving the project.
In the same month, James Wan announced that he would be leaving the project in favor of making a ‘Mortal Kombat’ reboot.
In August 2019, during an interview promoting ‘47 Meters Down: Uncaged’ with Screenrant.com, Roberts gave some insight into the reboot, stating:
“It’s gonna be super scary. It’s super, super scary. And it’s just getting back to the roots of the game.”
Fast forward to October 06, 2020, when Deadline.com reported that Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) had been cast as Claire Redfield alongside Hannah John-Kamen (Antman and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, Tom Hopper (Black Sails) as Albert Wesker, and Neal McDonough (Project Blue Book) as William Birkin.
Along with the casting announcement, Roberts stated that the film would be faithful to Capcom’s classic survival horror game, with the story being set in 1998 on a fateful night in Racoon City.
On November 02, 2020, we received another casting update when Deadline.com reported that Donal Logue (Gotham) would be joining the film as Chief Brian Irons. Along with Logue, Lily Gao was cast as Ada Wong and Chad Rook (Siren) as Richard Aiken.
On October 17, 2020, filming officially began in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and, thanks to Resident Evil enthusiast Biohazard Declassified posting images of the set on their Twitter account, we have been able to follow along with the production.
On October 29, 2020, Biohazard Declassified first posted an image of the front entrance to the Racoon Police Department. The image on the left was taken of the set, while the image on the right is from the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2.
Less than a week later, we received another post from Biohazard Declassified, this time a shot of the front gates under siege by a horde of the walking dead.
On October 31, 2020, Biohazard Declassified shared onset footage of an 18-wheeler that looks exactly like the one that crashes into the back of Leon’s cop car in Claire’s opening cut scene. It appears they are pulling out all the stops to make this movie as accurate to the source material as possible.
On November 12, 2020, Biohazard Declassified next shared an image of Emmy’s Diner, the diner that Claire first enters upon arriving in Racoon City. Fans of the game will remember that it’s in Emmy’s Diner that Claire has her first run-in with the undead and it’s also where she first meets Leon S. Kennedy in the game.
Just a day later, Biohazard Declassified gave us a shot of Gun Shop Kendo, the store featured in Resident Evil 2 and 3. In the post, it makes note of the graffiti spray-painted on the wall next to the shop that reads, “This too shall pass,” the same message written on the basketball court in Resident Evil 2.
Next, Biohazard Declassified shared images of a S.T.A.R.S. helicopter, along with what appears to be the front entrance to the Spencer Mansion. The helicopter most likely belongs to Bravo Team, who crashed in Racoon Forest while on a mission. Spencer Mansion needs no introduction as it served as the backdrop of the original game. These pictures prove that the film will also be including elements from the first game, further hinting that the movie will be an amalgamation of both Resident Evil 1 and 2.
On December 04, 2020, Biohazard Declassified shared another image. This time, it was an exterior shot of the front entrance to Racoon City Orphanage. This setting will be familiar to fans of Resident Evil 2, as it’s where Claire has to rescue Sherry Birkin from Chief Irons. Could this mean that Sherry will be making an appearance in the movie?
As previously noted by Horror Facts, the character of Alice, made famous by Milla Jovovich, will not be making an appearance in the reboot, as this time around the film studio is looking to make the movie closer to the game.
