Showtime just announced that they’re reviving Dexter for a 10-episode limited run, with Michael C. Hall reprising his role as the titular character. Although the exact plot of the series is being kept a secret at this time, what is known is that production is expected to start in 2021, with a fall 2021 debut.
Regarding the revival, Co-President of Entertainment for Showtime, Gary Levine, had this to say:
“We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world!”
The original run of Dexter ended in 2013, after eight seasons, with what some people consider to be the “worst TV series finale of all time.” For those of you who missed it, or have chosen to forget it, allow me to refresh your memory.
The finale saw Dexter (Michael C. Hall) unplug his sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) off life support after she is left brain dead following complications of a stroke. Dexter then takes Debra’s body out to sea during a hurricane and proceeds to drop her into the water – the same fate as all his other victims. Dexter, caught in the storm, is presumed dead after wreckage of his boat is discovered floating in the water. Dexter’s girlfriend, Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski), learns of the news while in Buenos Aires and is presumably left to raise Dexter’s son, Harrison (Jadon Wells). Before the episode concludes, we are left with the final image of Dexter working as a lumberjack and very much alive. This ending is what left a bad taste in a lot of viewers’ mouths as it left too many unanswered questions.
With this announced revival, one has to wonder if the reason behind keeping Dexter alive was because Showtime always planned to revisit the show at a later date. Or is it simply because the network has run out of original ideas? Whatever the reason for bringing the show back, this could be another chance to make everything right. Or it could make everything even worse than it already is.
