It appears ‘Salem’s Lot’ is not the only vampire remake in the works these days, as Warner Bros. has announced that they are planning to take another stab at ‘The Lost Boys.’
‘The Lost Boys’ tells the story of two brothers who move to a new town and discover that the town is occupied by vampires.
The new film, which is currently being written by Randy McKinnon (Grand Army) and with Jonathan Entwistle (I Am Not Okay With This) attached to direct, is said to be a modern-day remake of the original. Official details on the plot are currently being withheld.
What is known at this time is that Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) and Jaeden Martell (It / It Chapter Two) are attached to the film in undisclosed roles.
The original ‘The Lost Boys’ was released in 1987 and was directed by Joel Schumacher and written by Jeffrey Boam. It was based on a story by Janice Fischer and James Jeremias.
The film starred Jason Patric as Michael Emerson, Jami Gertz as Star, Corey Haim as Sam Emerson, Dianne West as Lucy Emerson, Corey Feldman as Edgar Frog, Jamison Newlander as Alan Frog, Edward Hermann as Max, Brooke McCarter as Paul, Billy Wirth as Dwyane, Alex Winter as Marko, Barnard Hughes as Grandpa, Chance Michael Corbitt as Laddie, and Kiefer Sutherland as David Powers.
Richard Donner (The Goonies) was originally attached to direct, with the story revolving around a younger group of vampires and the film being more juvenile in nature. Other notable differences in this original premise included making the character of Star a young boy and the Frog brothers eight-year-old Cub Scouts.
After Donner left the project, Schumacher signed on and hired Boam to revise the script by aging the cast, making the film darker, and gearing the movie more towards adults.
Following the success of the film, Schumacher attempted to develop a sequel titled ‘Lost Girls’ but was, unfortunately, never able to get the film into production.
In 2008, a direct-to-DVD sequel ‘Lost Boys: The Tribe’ was finally released. Feldman reprised his original role in the film with Haim only returning in a small cameo appearance. Newlander filmed some scenes in the movie but they ultimately ended up being deleted.
A third film was released in 2010, ‘Lost Boys: The Thirst.’ Feldman once again returned in this third installment along with Newlander.
A recent ‘The Lost Boys’ television series was in the works at the CW, but production on the series was shut down in March, 2020 due to the pandemic. The studio later decided to pass on the project.
